Passages: Sidney Harman, Roger Nichols
Two notable losses in the world of music and consumer electronics:
- Dr. Sidney Harman (April 12), whose namesake Harman International and roster of brands (including Harman Kardon (est. 1953)) paved the way for audiophiles around the world to enjoy high performance sound. Dr. Harman, whose career beyond the Consumer Electronics world included stints in politics (as Undersecretary of Commerce under President Carter), remained active in business to the end, including a celebrated acquisition of Newsweek from the Washington Post in 2010.
- Roger Nichols (April 9), Seven-time Grammy winner for his work on recordings for Steely Dan, including the seminal classic Aja (1977). An innovator in recorded sound, Nichols helped to deliver the potent audiophile-quality sound on many of their albums, including Can’t Buy A Thrill, and Countdown To Ecstasy.
